By Lindsey Erin
My name is Lindsey, and I am the founder of OWL which stands for One Whole Life, a health and wellness brand based in Venice, CA.
OWL was born out of a desire to truly care for myself. After experiencing severe digestive issues, I decided to embark on a healing journey.
For a year I gave up alcohol, dairy, gluten, corn, soy, limited sugar and supplemented my diet with a daily cup of broth. As a private chef and total foodie, I couldn’t find any broths I liked, so I decided to create my own.
The first time I tried my luck at whipping up a batch, I nearly burnt down my apartment! After much trial and error, and a very stinky apartment, I created an herbal broth elixir that combined the healing powers of the bones with the medicinal benefits of the herbs, roots and veggies used in each of our handcrafted recipes.
Not only did the broth curb my cravings, but it also improved my complexion, lubricated my joints, increased my mental acuity, and healed my digestive distress.
My friends took notice, and started asking me for a quart of what is now OWL’s flagship product. After a post on Facebook that resulted in over 100 orders in less than a week, I knew I was onto something special.
To say my journey has been remarkable would be an understatement. The power of sharing not only my own story, but adding value to others’ lives and witness their transformation as well is the most fulfilling part of what we do at OWL.
Fall is here, and with it comes a multitude of changes.
Changes in the weather and how our immune systems respond is of tantamount importance.
So, if you ever feel like you’re coming down with a little bug, or perhaps just need a little “pick me up” to soothe your soul, try this recipe for a most satisfying broth elixir.
Start with your favorite type of bones- whether it’s beef, bison, chicken, turkey or fish is entirely up to you!
Pick a nice size pot that can handle about a gallon’s worth of broth. Then add water. We like to use alkaline water to help bring up our own pH levels within our bodies.
From there, throw in some apple cider vinegar, and let it all come to a boil. Once it starts boiling, bring the heat down to a simmer. Remember, the secret to amazing broth is the slow extraction time needed to pull all those beneficial minerals and nutrients from the marrow.
The last few hours of the cook time is when you can add all of your favorite veggies, herbs, and mushrooms. Keep in mind that bone broth, at its core, is not only the base of so many enriching meals in every culture around the world, but is also a medicine.
Harness the healing powers of ginger, turmeric, sage, and rosemary to supercharge your immune system and enliven your day.
At around 24 hours of cooking, turn off the heat and strain all the bones, veggies, and herbs.
We like to store our creations in glass mason jars, and recommend you do the same.
